Phase Two

Shortlist

short-listed concept masterplan designs

This web page features the A1 sheets and representative publicity images submitted to the second phase of the design ideas competition by the three other short-listed teams. The submissions are featured in alphabetical order of the architect firm leading each design team.

The Adjudication Panel was interested to see how short-listed teams had further responded to the Re-Imagining the Garden City design ideas challenge and feedback provided following appraisal of the phase one submissions. The Panel was particularly interested in how teams had built on Letchworth's founding philosophy and rich legacy to inform the next stage of the Garden City's evolution, and how this might influence other and different developments in the future. Teams variously sought to translate the core Garden City principles of healthy communities, generous green spaces and food production into a modern-day context that was both innovative and deliverable.

Commensurate with their short-listing, the Panel felt that there were respective strengths and weaknesses in all the schemes, with each containing appealing aspects in terms of either the overall masterplan treatment; approach to sustainability / resources / building technologies; architectural expression of proposed housing typologies; the manifestation of a sense of place and how future residents might live, work and play in community-focused neighbourhood clusters etc. Productive landscapes, on-site food production, the adoption of agroforestry practices and/or growing neighbourhoods were strong and repeated informing ideas.
